![]() The format of the book is flexible enough to enable instructors to emphasize topics that are consistent with the goals of the course.Basic stiffness relations are derived using both the traditional mechanics of materials principles and the finite element approach (via the principle of virtual work) to familiarize the students with the finite element terminology (e.g., shape functions, etc.) that they will encounter in advanced level courses. Thus, a prior knowledge of the classical methods of structural analysis is not essential for understanding the material presented in this book. Throughout the book, all relationships necessary for the matrix stiffness analysis are formulated using the basic principles of the mechanics of deformable bodies. Each chapter begins with an introduction defining its objectives, and ends with a summary reviewing its salient features.
